The New Zealand Forces

The New Zealand Forces had a relatively substantial presence on Santo, particularly the RNZAF which operated squadrons of Hudsons, Venturas and other aircraft. The first RNZAF squadron to reach Santo was No 3 Bomber Squadron, flying Hudsons, which arrived on 14 and 15 October 1942. One flight of No 3 Squadron moved north to Guadalcanal in November 1942, with the most of the remainder following by 6 December. A small rear echelon remained on Santo to provide replacements and servicing.

Early New Zealand forces mail from Santo bears cancel of "NZEF - NZAPO 150 - No 6" but this was later replaced by the coded cds "NZAPO B" . An endorsement such as "On Active Service" or "Forces Mail" usually ensured free postage.

NZEF - NZAPO 150 - No 6

17 March 1943 - A letter posted by a member of the rear echelon of No 3 Bomber Squadron.

NZAPO B

1 August 1944 - The use by an New Zealand RNZAF ground crew member of US Navy stationery.
Clear strikes of NZAPO B, such as this, are comparatively rare.
